Chips and AI-adjacent names ripped: the semiconductor index had its best day since August on an "agentic AI needs CPUs too" thesis, AMD crossed $1 trillion in market cap, Intel jumped 12%, and Qualcomm leaned hard into on-device agentic AI at its Snapdragon Summit. Meta rode the same wave, up 11.3% with no single story behind it.
Energy refiners gave back some of an 80%+ year-to-date run: Marathon Petroleum, Valero and Phillips 66 all fell 4-5% as a Saudi pipeline restart and talk of Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz eased crude flows, the exact mechanism that could compress the record crack spreads that took these three up so far this year.
Warner Bros. Discovery jumped 10.8% after a judge set a hearing on the state AGs' settlement with Paramount, clearing the last legal hurdle for the merger, though the FT flagged it still has to win over the bond market.
The index barely moved (S&P flat, Nasdaq +0.45%) despite all that dispersion. Fear & Greed's breadth and price-strength readings sit at zero (extreme fear) even as the headline score reads a milder 35, and Reuters flagged financials broadly lagging on the same AI-driven rotation plus a flattening yield curve.
